Memorial Garden for the Fallen, Phase II at Dover Air Force Base
On May 30, 2011, the Memorial Garden for the Fallen, Phase I was dedicated at Dover Air Force Base as a project by Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs supported nationwide by members of National Garden Club, Inc. More than $250,000 was raised for the garden project from more than 800 benefactors from across the country. The garden is an enclosed landscape located adjacent to the Center for Families of the Fallen - a facility that provides support to grieving families. The garden, which is not open to the public, is a private space to comfort those who are visiting Dover Air Force Base to receive the remains of their loved ones.
Dover Air Force Base is the nation's only stateside military mortuary. Every military casualty outside the United States - no matter what rank, branch of service, or manner of death - is transported to Dover Air Force Base and prepared for burial.
Ground was broken for a new Base Chapel to be completed in the summer of 2012. Plans are underway to create a Chapel Garden, Phase II of the Memorial Garden for the Fallen. CGCI will match $100 donations from CGCI districts, clubs or individuals, up to a total CGCI contribution of $5,000 in support of the Memorial Garden for the Fallen, Phase II approved at the 2012 Winter Board meeting.
Please complete the Memorial Garden for the Fallen, Phase II donation form and send to Sandy Rogers, Chairman. CGCI districts, clubs and individuals have a chance to make a difference by supporting Phase II of this project! Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs consists of 895 members in 28 garden clubs.
