SCOPE
California Garden Clubs, Inc. (CGCI) is a non-profit federation of garden clubs devoted to the education in and development of all phases of gardening, the betterment and beautification of the community and the protection and conservation of our natural resources.

ORIGIN
CGCI was organized on December 5, 1931 at the Santa Maria Inn in Santa Maria with 23 charter clubs. CGCI was admitted to membership in National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) on December 5, 1932 and incorporated on May 13, 1936.

MISSION STATEMENT
California Garden Clubs, Inc. promotes gardening, floral design, civic beautification, environmental responsibility and the exchange of information and ideas.

STRUCTURE
A garden club belongs to one of 28 geographic districts within California. CGCI is one of the eight state federations in the Pacific Region that is one of eight regions in NGC. CGCI is the largest state federation in NGC, and NGC is the largest volunteer gardening organization in the world.

CGCI offers member clubs and associate plant societies:

  • Informative programs and workshops at its annual conventions


MEMBERSHIP
CGCI welcomes all garden clubs or plant societies having one or more of CGCI’s objectives in common to join as members providing no sectarian, racial or political test for membership is required.

Garden clubs belong to a CGCI geographic district and pay per capita dues.

Associate Plant Societies pay per capita dues, must belong to a national or statewide plant society but do not belong to a CGCI geographic district.


DUES
Each garden club and associate plant society pays annual dues of $1.25 per capita of which $.50 goes to NGC.

PUBLICATIONS
Golden Gardens, the official publication of CGCI, is published five times a year. The magazine presents state, regional and national news and articles on horticulture and floral design. The publication also lists educational schools, symposia and events open to CGCI club members and the public.

2007 – 2009 PRESIDENT
Robin Pokorski of San Fernando joined Southern California Garden Club in 1989. She has served as club president, District Director, and 12 years on the CGCI Executive Committee prior to serving as President. Robin is a Flower Show Judge, Landscape Design Consultant, Gardening Consultant, and Environmental Consultant making her an NGC 4-Star Member. Robin is active on the Pacific Region and NGC Boards of Directors. Robin, whose theme is “Garden Club: A Natural Place to Grow,” looks forward to visiting as many of the clubs and districts as possible during her two-year (2007 – 2009) term.
