California Garden Clubs, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization under Section 503(c) of the Internal Revenue Code. This section affords CGCI tax exempt status. CGCI member clubs that are in good standing, qualify unde the rules set forth by the Internal Revenue Service of the Unites States of America, and apply to CGCI to be included can be granted tax exempt status under the blanket exemption granted to CGCI as the parent organization. CGCI received the Group Exemption Letter from the IRS in the acceptance letter dated November 15, 2006. By obtaining a Group Exemption Letter, CGCI is able to pass along, to its subordinates, its tax exemption status thus making qualifiying member clubs eligible to be claimed as a 501(c) organization under the same status as CGCI. In other words, CGCI is recognized as a 501(c)(3), so approved member clus may also be considered 501(c)(3), as long as they follow the required guidelines set by CGCI on the basis of IRS requirements. By being included in the Group Exemption Letter, the subordinates do not have to file an application for exemption and can accept donations that are tax-deductible under the law. A major benefit is that a member club does not have to pay the fees to obtain an exemption letter. To go to the Group Exemption Program page, click here.
